Keele University Chancellor

Big development for me this afternoon (10 November 2011), when Keele University announced that I would be installed as its next Chancellor in February next year.

To be honest, I am still a bit taken aback by this, not really having seen myself as ‘Chancellor material’ before now.

But I am hugely honoured by this – not least because Keele was very early partner for Forum for the Future in the 1990s, when myself, and fellow Co-Founders Sara Parkin and Paul Ekins worked together on defining a set of integrated sustainability measures – that then lead on to the development of the Forum’s Five Capitals model.

I lead the Sustainability Hub at Sheffield Hallam University and am a one person route and conduit in to the university in research and knowledge transfer activities in sustainability . I involve academics and students in projects that make a difference for external organisations. I break the silo culture by being pan-university topic based and multidisciplinary. I echo your view that sustainability in HE should be holistic across the estate, and the curriculum, but feel that you missed the importance of industry engagement in terms of staff development, student experience and profile/reputation of the institution.
